Road Conditions
Narrow Bridges
59 one-lane bridges require yielding. If you're on the bridge first, you have right of way. Otherwise, wait for oncoming traffic to clear.
Hairpin Turns
620+ curves with many blind corners. Drive slowly (15-25 mph on curves), use your horn before blind turns, and stay in your lane.
Road Surface
Mostly paved but can be wet and slippery. Watch for falling rocks, debris, and occasional potholes. Road is well-maintained but narrow.
Limited Pullouts
Few places to pull over safely. Never stop in the middle of the road. Use designated pullouts and be courteous to faster drivers.
Rental Car Restrictions
4WD NOT Required
A regular car is perfectly fine for the Road to Hana. The road is paved and doesn't require 4-wheel drive.
Check Your Contract
Some rental companies restrict driving on certain roads. Read your contract carefully. Most allow the Road to Hana, but some prohibit the "back road" past Hana.
Insurance Coverage
Verify your insurance covers the Road to Hana. Some policies exclude certain roads. Consider additional coverage for peace of mind.
Recommended Features
Choose a car with good brakes, responsive steering, and a backup camera if possible. Smaller cars are easier to maneuver on narrow roads.

No, you do not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the Road to Hana. The road is completely paved and a regular car is perfectly fine.
