Best Countries to Visit in Asia

Each Asian destination offers something distinct. Here is what makes each country worth the trip, with the best time to visit and typical daily budgets.

🇯🇵 Japan

Ancient temples, modern cities, and bullet trains connecting them all

Japan is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations on earth. Tokyo is a city of infinite neighborhoods — Shibuya's crossing, Shinjuku's izakayas, Harajuku's fashion streets, and Akihabara's electronics markets. Kyoto preserves Japan's classical soul with Fushimi Inari's vermillion gates, Arashiyama's bamboo groves, and geisha districts largely unchanged for centuries. Osaka is the food capital of a food-obsessed nation: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, ramen, and conveyor-belt sushi at every price point. The bullet train Shinkansen network connects major cities at speeds of up to 320 km/h, making multi-city travel effortless. Hiroshima and Nagasaki carry profound historical weight alongside memorials of extraordinary dignity. Nara offers tame deer wandering among ancient temples, and the Japanese Alps hide onsen resort towns under winter snowfall. Japan is also exceptionally safe, clean, and punctual — a genuinely easy country to navigate despite the language barrier.

🗓 Best time: March–May, September–November💰 Budget: £55–£140/day (approx)

🇹🇭 Thailand

Beaches, temples, street food, and smiles at every turn

Thailand delivers extraordinary value across every category of travel. Bangkok is a chaotic, intoxicating capital of gilded temples, river boats, rooftop bars, and street food markets that run around the clock. Chiang Mai in the north is slower and cooler, surrounded by elephant sanctuaries, hill tribe villages, and jungle trekking routes. The southern islands split between the Andaman Sea coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) for emerald water and limestone karst scenery, and the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) for coral reefs and backpacker beaches. Thai cuisine — pad thai, som tam, tom yum, massaman curry, mango sticky rice — is reason enough to visit. The country's Buddhist temple culture gives even short trips a spiritual dimension that beach destinations alone cannot provide. Combined with some of Asia's most welcoming hospitality, Thailand consistently earns its place at the top of every Southeast Asia itinerary.

🗓 Best time: November–April (dry season)💰 Budget: £35–£90/day (approx)

🇻🇳 Vietnam

A long, beautiful country of mountains, beaches, and extraordinary food

Vietnam is a country of remarkable diversity packed into a thousand-kilometre stretch of coastline. In the north, Hanoi is a graceful old city of colonial architecture, the legendary Hoan Kiem Lake, and the finest pho in the world. Ha Long Bay — thousands of limestone karsts rising from jade-green water — is one of Asia's most iconic landscapes. The ancient trading town of Hoi An, with its lantern-lit streets, riverside cafes, and skilled tailors, is uniquely charming. Hue preserves Vietnam's imperial court in weathered palaces and royal tombs. Ho Chi Minh City in the south pulses with motorbike energy, war history, and extraordinary street food. The Mekong Delta, Phong Nha caves, and the cool highlands of Sapa round out one of Southeast Asia's most complete itineraries. Vietnam's food scene — fresh herbs, fish sauce, and intense regional variation from north to south — is arguably the continent's best.

🗓 Best time: February–April, August–October💰 Budget: £16–£48/day (approx)

🇮🇩 Bali, Indonesia

Rice terraces, Hindu temples, surf, and a spiritual culture unlike anywhere else

Bali combines great surfing beaches at Uluwatu, Canggu, and Seminyak with terraced rice fields of extraordinary beauty and a living Hindu culture unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Ubud is the island's cultural heart — home to traditional Kecak dance performances, cooking classes, the Sacred Monkey Forest, and a thriving wellness and yoga scene. The Gili Islands off neighboring Lombok offer excellent snorkeling, white sand beaches, and a car-free, relaxed contrast to Bali's busier spots. Sunrise hikes on Mount Batur reward early risers with crater-lake views from the caldera rim. Beyond Bali, Indonesia's 17,000 islands include Raja Ampat (one of the world's finest diving destinations), the Komodo Islands (Komodo dragons and pink beaches), and Flores. Bali alone justifies the trip, but Indonesia rewards those who venture further.

🗓 Best time: April–October (dry season)💰 Budget: £20–£60/day (approx)

🇮🇳 India

The most intense, complex, and unforgettable country on earth

India is not a destination — it is a life experience that most travelers describe as overwhelming, beautiful, and completely unlike anywhere else. The Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) is the classic introduction: Delhi's Mughal monuments and bazaar culture, the Taj Mahal at dawn in its full architectural perfection, and Jaipur's Pink City of palaces and spice markets. Kerala in the south is a different world: backwaters navigable by houseboat, spice plantations, Ayurvedic wellness retreats, and a spice cuisine entirely distinct from the north. Rajasthan is a state of desert forts and royal excess — Udaipur's lake-palace romance, Jodhpur's blue city of flat-roofed houses, Jaisalmer's golden sandstone rising from the Thar Desert. Mumbai pulses with Bollywood energy, colonial Victorian architecture, and street food culture centered on the dabbawalas and chaat carts. India requires patience and flexibility, and rewards both in extraordinary measure.

🗓 Best time: October–March (avoiding monsoon and peak heat)💰 Budget: £19–£57/day (approx)

Asia Travel FAQs

What is the best Asian country for first-time visitors?

Japan and Thailand are the most popular first-time Asian destinations. Japan is spectacularly safe, clean, and easy to navigate on its rail network, with world-class cities and extraordinary cultural depth. Thailand combines beaches, temples, and food into one of the world's most accessible experiences, at significantly lower cost. Both are superb introductions to Asian travel. Vietnam is an increasingly popular alternative for its food, scenery, and outstanding value.

How long do I need for an Asia trip?

Two weeks is the minimum to do one destination justice — enough time to cover Japan's main cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) or Thailand's Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and one island. Three weeks opens up combinations: Thailand and Vietnam, or Japan plus a beach trip to Okinawa or Bali. A month lets you cover two countries properly or one country deeply. Flying into one hub and out of another (open-jaw ticket) saves backtracking.

Is Asia safe to travel?

Most popular Asian destinations are very safe for tourists. Japan consistently ranks among the world's safest countries. Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and Singapore are well-established destinations with low violent crime rates. India requires more urban awareness, particularly in busy markets. Standard precautions — secure belongings, use reputable transport, trust your instincts — remove most risk. Check your government's travel advisory for current conditions.

When should I avoid Southeast Asia?

The monsoon season (roughly May–October for mainland Southeast Asia) brings heavy rain and high humidity. Most activities continue, but outdoor plans are often disrupted. Bali's wet season (November–March) is similarly rainy. Japan's June rainy season (tsuyu) is milder. India's monsoon (July–September) is actually beautiful in some regions. Check the specific months for each country on your itinerary.

How much does an Asia trip cost?

Southeast Asia is very affordable — budget travelers live well in Thailand or Vietnam on £25–£50 per day including accommodation, food, and transport. Bali is similar. Japan and Singapore cost more, closer to European prices, but convenience-store meals and capsule hotels make budget travel feasible. India is among the world's most affordable destinations. The biggest cost for most travelers is the international flight.
