Flying time (also called flight time) is simply the time spent in the air from takeoff to landing — it doesn't include taxiing, boarding, or layovers. The estimates below give you the in-air flying time between two cities so you can plan connections, jet-lag recovery, and arrival times with confidence.

How Airlines Calculate Flight Duration

The published flight time you see when booking includes more than just time in the air. It covers "block time" — from when the aircraft pushes back from the departure gate to when it arrives at the destination gate. This includes taxiing, waiting for takeoff clearance, the climb to cruising altitude, descent, and taxiing to the gate on arrival. Airlines also pad their schedules to improve on-time performance statistics.

Understanding Headwinds and the Jet Stream

The single biggest reason real flight times differ from straight calculations is wind. The jet stream — a band of fast-moving air at cruising altitude — generally flows from west to east. Eastbound flights ride this tailwind and arrive earlier; westbound flights fight it. On a route like Los Angeles to London, the eastbound leg can be over an hour shorter than the return.
