Indonesia is not a visa-free destination for most visitors, but getting into Bali is straightforward. Citizens of around 90 countries — including the US, UK, all EU nations, Canada, and Australia — can buy a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport, or arrange the equivalent e-VOA online before they fly.

This guide explains how the VOA and e-VOA work, what they cost, how long you can stay, how to extend, and the separate Bali tourist levy that all foreign visitors now pay.

Visa on Arrival (VOA) vs e-VOA

There are two ways to get the same 30-day tourist entry. The Visa on Arrival (VOA) is purchased at the airport on landing — at Bali's Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) airport there are dedicated payment counters before immigration. The e-VOA is the identical visa applied for online in advance through Indonesia's official immigration portal, letting you skip the payment queue and use the electronic gates.

Both cost the same and grant the same 30-day stay, extendable once inside Indonesia for another 30 days.

Who Can Use the Visa on Arrival

The VOA / e-VOA is available to citizens of roughly 90 countries, including:

  • United States, Canada, Mexico
  • United Kingdom and all European Union countries
  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Most of Southeast and East Asia (Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.)
  • If your country is not on the VOA list, you must apply for a visa in advance through an Indonesian embassy.

Entry Requirements & The Bali Tourist Levy

To enter on a VOA you generally need a passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date, proof of onward or return travel, and the means to support your stay.

Separately, all foreign tourists visiting Bali pay a one-time Bali tourist levy (introduced in 2024). It is paid online through the official Love Bali portal or on arrival, and is separate from your visa fee. Keep the payment confirmation, as it may be checked.

Travel insurance is often required

Many visas and entry systems require proof of travel medical insurance — and even where it is not mandatory, it protects you against medical bills, cancellations, and lost baggage. Compare cover that meets visa requirements.

Extending Your Stay

A 30-day VOA can be extended once, for an additional 30 days, giving 60 days total. Extensions are handled at a local immigration office in Bali, or increasingly through the online system — many visitors use an agent to handle the paperwork.

If you need longer than 60 days, you must look at other visa categories (such as a longer-stay tourist visa applied for in advance), which fall outside the scope of the simple VOA.

Important Notes

  • The VOA is for tourism and certain short business activities only — you cannot work on it.
  • Overstaying your visa incurs a significant daily fine, so track your departure date carefully.
  • Rules and fees change — confirm the current VOA fee and tourist levy amount on the official portals below before travelling.
