Best Places to Travel in February

Carnival, winter sun, and shoulder-season escapes

February is one of the most rewarding months to travel, precisely because it is overlooked. It sits in the quiet stretch after the festive rush and before spring break, which means lower prices and thinner crowds almost everywhere — and yet the weather lines up beautifully across several very different kinds of trip.

You can chase reliable winter sun in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, throw yourself into the world's biggest festivals during Carnival season, ski Japan's best powder of the year, or head south for safari and summer. Here are the best places to travel in February, grouped by the kind of trip you are after.

Brazil & Venice — Carnival Season

February is Carnival month, and it produces two of the most atmospheric events on the travel calendar. Rio de Janeiro hosts the world's most famous celebration — days of samba parades, street parties and all-night energy, usually peaking in late February. Venice offers the complete opposite mood: an elegant, masked Carnevale of candlelit balls and Renaissance costume drifting through misty canals.

Both are peak-demand events, so book flights and accommodation well ahead and expect premium prices during the festival itself. If you want the atmosphere without the crush, arrive a few days early or visit in the run-up week.

The Caribbean — Peak Winter Sun

February is the heart of the Caribbean's dry season: warm, sunny days, low humidity and calm seas across islands like Aruba, Barbados, the Dominican Republic and St Lucia. It is the single most reliable place to escape the northern winter, which is exactly why it is busy — this is high season, so beaches and resorts fill up.

For better value, look at the ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, which sit below the hurricane belt, or book a few weeks out for shoulder pricing.

Southeast Asia — Cool, Dry & Comfortable

Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos remain in their dry season through February — warm but not yet oppressively hot, with low rainfall. It is arguably the best month of the year for temples, island-hopping and street food, before the heavy humidity of spring sets in.

Northern Thailand and northern Vietnam can be pleasantly cool in the evenings, so pack a light layer for Chiang Mai or Sapa.

Japan — Powder Snow & Quiet Temples

February is peak ski season in Japan, when Hokkaido and Nagano get the light, dry powder the country is famous for. Beyond the slopes, it is a wonderfully quiet time to see snow-dusted temples in Kyoto and the Japanese Alps, with far fewer tourists than the cherry-blossom and autumn peaks.

It is cold, so plan for proper winter clothing, but the trade-off is short lift queues and uncrowded sights.

Tanzania — The Great Calving

In the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, February is calving season for the wildebeest migration: hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks, drawing concentrated predator action that makes for some of the most dramatic safari viewing of the year.

It pairs naturally with a few days on Zanzibar afterwards, which is warm and dry in February.

Where to Find the Best Value

Because February falls between the festive and spring-break peaks, European city breaks are unusually good value — Lisbon, Seville, Rome and Budapest are quiet and inexpensive, if cool. The same logic applies to mountain towns mid-week and to long-haul flights booked outside the Carnival and half-term windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

February is great for Carnival (Rio de Janeiro, Venice), warm-weather escapes (Caribbean, Southeast Asia), powder skiing and quiet sightseeing in Japan, and safari in Tanzania during the wildebeest calving season. Because it falls between the festive and spring-break peaks, it is also a good-value, lower-crowd month for European city breaks.
