Dubai International is one of the world's busiest airports for international passengers and the global home of Emirates. As a connecting hub between Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia, DXB is a place where millions of travellers spend a layover each year — and it is well set up for exactly that.
This guide covers the terminals, the very quick Metro link into the city, connection times, and how to make the most of a long Dubai layover.
Terminals & Layout
DXB has three terminals. Terminal 3 is the vast dedicated Emirates terminal (one of the largest buildings in the world) and handles most long-haul connections; Terminal 1 serves many other international airlines; Terminal 2 handles flydubai and regional carriers. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected airside for transit passengers, while Terminal 2 is on the opposite side of the airfield.
For Emirates-to-Emirates connections you will usually stay within Terminal 3, with its three concourses (A, B, C) linked by trains and walkways.
Getting To & From the City
| Option | Time to central Dubai | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Metro (Red Line) | 10–20 min | Cheap and fast. Stations at Terminals 1 and 3, direct to Downtown, Burj Khalifa, and Marina. |
| Taxi | ~15 min | Plentiful, metered, and affordable; available 24/7 outside arrivals. |
| Rideshare | ~15 min | Careem and Uber operate in Dubai. |
Layovers & Connections
Emirates connections within Terminal 3 are smooth and can work from about 75–90 minutes, with clear transit signage and frequent shuttle trains between concourses. Connections involving a terminal change need more time.
DXB excels for long layovers. With the Metro reaching Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall) in around 15–20 minutes, layovers of 6+ hours easily allow a trip into the city — just budget time to clear immigration (many nationalities get visa-free or on-arrival entry) and return through security. For shorter layovers, the airport itself has hotels, lounges, spas, sleep pods, and even indoor gardens.

Food, Lounges & Sleep

- On-site hotels inside Terminals 1 and 3 (bookable by the hour) are ideal for long layovers.
- Quiet zones, sleep pods, showers, and spa facilities are available for transit passengers.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout; consider an eSIM for data the moment you land if leaving the airport.
