Tokyo is served by two major airports, and Haneda (HND) has a big advantage over Narita (NRT): it is far closer to the city — around 15–30 minutes to central Tokyo versus an hour or more from Narita. Haneda has expanded its international operations significantly and is now a superb gateway to Japan.

This guide covers Haneda's terminals, its fast train links, and how it compares to Narita.

Haneda vs Narita

Haneda (HND) sits just south of central Tokyo and is the more convenient airport for the city. Narita (NRT) is around 60 km east, an hour or more away by train. Both handle international flights, so check which airport your ticket uses — arriving at Haneda saves significant time and transfer cost.

If you have a connection that switches between Haneda and Narita, treat it like a city crossing: it takes a couple of hours by train or bus, so allow a generous buffer.

Terminals & Layout

Haneda has three terminals: Terminals 1 and 2 handle domestic flights (with some international service from T2), and Terminal 3 is the main international terminal. Free shuttle buses and underground walkways connect the terminals.

International-to-domestic connections may require moving between Terminal 3 and Terminals 1 or 2, so allow time for the transfer and any re-checking.

Estimate your flight time and compare fares before you book — then find a hotel right by the airport for early departures and long layovers.

Layovers & Connections

Connections at Haneda can work from about 60–90 minutes within the same terminal grouping; allow more if you change terminals. With central Tokyo just 15–30 minutes away, Haneda is excellent for a city trip on a longer layover — Japan is visa-free for many nationalities, and the Visit Japan Web system speeds up entry.

Haneda is also known for being clean, calm, and easy to navigate, with strong dining and observation decks for plane-spotting between flights.
